club-hachichins-theophile-gautier-L-qxJg5D-175x130The Club des Hashischins ( “Club of the Hashish-Eaters”) was a Parisian group dedicated to the exploration of drug-induced experiences, notably with hashish. It was the first and oldest cannabis club in the world.
The club was active from about 1844 to 1849 and counted the literary and intellectual elite of Paris among its members,  Dr. Jacques-Joseph Moreau, Théophile Gautier, Gérard de Nerval, Eugène Delacroix and Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire, Honoré de Balzac and Fitz Hugh Ludlow. Monthly “séances” were held at the Hôtel de Lauzun (at that time Hôtel Pimodan) on the Île Saint-Louis.

Hashish is made from cannabinoid-rich glandular hairs known as trichomes. Certain strains of cannabis are cultivated specifically for their ability to produce large amounts of trichomes. The resin reservoirs of the trichomes, sometimes erroneously called pollen (vendors often use the euphemism “pollen catchers” to describe screened kief-grinders in order to skirt paraphernalia selling laws), are separated from the plant through various methods.Wikipedia

“The entire truth of Nature cannot be copied,” so “the artist must select between the major and minor facts of the outer world; that, before he executes, he must pronounce whether he will embody the essential effect, that which steals on the soul and possesses it without painful analysis, or the separate details which belong to the geometrician and destroy the effect. – Fitz Hugh Ludlow ”
